Join the Region of Durham’s Truth and Reconciliation Awareness Walk
The Region of Durham, in partnership with the City of Pickering and Town of Whitby, is hosting a walk in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 20 at 9:30 a.m.
The walk will begin at the Pathway to Reconciliation Crosswalk, located near the south entrance of Durham Regional Headquarters in Whitby (near Garden Street), and continue along Rossland Road to Fallingbrook Park, at the intersection of Rossland Road and Anderson Street.
We will stop at the park for a reflection activity before returning to Durham Region Headquarters where refreshments will be served.
Those who plan to attend are asked to register to participate in the walk and wear an orange shirt if possible. Participants are also reminded to bring a water bottle.
When: September 20, 2024 from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
Where: Durham Regional Headquarters, Pathway to Reconciliation Crosswalk, 605 Rossland Road East, Whitby.
Who: This event is being planned by the Indigenous Advocacy Subcommittee of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Working Group, in collaboration with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Division and in partnership with the City of Pickering and Town of Whitby.
Why: The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, their families and communities who continue to be impacted by these tragedies. This day is a time to reflect on our role in supporting the healing process, committing to tangible actions in truth and reconciliation and showing respect for the heritage, diverse cultures and achievements of all First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.
